What Is Radiofrequency Skin Tightening?

Radiofrequency devices are professional machines in dermatology offices such as ours that can be used to tighten loose and sagging skin. There are many types of these devices on the market. Some of the more popular brands are Thermage or Elos Sublime.

How Does Radio Frequency Skin Tightening Work?

These radiofrequency devices work by gently heating the deeper layers of the skin while still protecting the skin’s surface. The heat of these devices activates cells in the skin called fibroblasts.  Fibroblasts then turn on the formation of new, healthy, strong collagen and tighten existing collagen. Anyone looking to tighten their neck, jowls, cheeks, and forehead may benefit from radiofrequency tightening devices. Results are not immediate but happen gradually over a period of months giving a naturally enhanced look.  While radiofrequency devices can tighten the skin, they are not a substitute for a facelift.  Some patients will combine using fillers (such as Restylane and Juvederm) and other injectables (such as Botox, Dysport and Jeuveau) along with radiofrequency treatments to also help tighten the skin. It is safe to do more than one type of treatment and often gives natural looking tightening results.

After Laser Skin Tightening Treatment

Immediately after being treated with laser skin tightening device, most patients have normal appearing skin and have no downtime.  Some patients may experience slight pinkness or swelling in the treated areas, but this will dissipate within the hour or by the end of the day.

The treatment causes minimal discomfort and is performed by one of our board-certified dermatologists.  It takes about 15 – 20 minutes depending on the area treated.  After treatment, patients can go about their usual routine without downtime.  Most patients will repeat the treatment every 6 – 12 months.
