At The Dermatology Institute of Boston, our expert dermatologists help patients achieve rejuvenated and volumized undereyes with PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) injections. PRFM is also an excellent minimally invasive hair-regrowth treatment.

PRFM is the next generation of PRP injections. Like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin), this substance is derived from the patient’s own blood and used to revitalize the scalp and areas of the face.
However, PRFM takes it a step further by providing longer-lasting results thanks to its fibrin matrix. The matrix extends the release time of various revitalizing ingredients; platelets can release their growth factors in the treatment area for up to seven days.
We inject PRFM below the eyes to address undereye circles and fine wrinkles, enhance collagen production and skin texture, and restore volume. We inject it into the scalp to address areas of hair loss, encouraging new growth.
Because platelet-rich fibrin matrix comes from the patient’s own body, it’s incredibly safe and has a very low chance of post-treatment side effects.
Boston, MA, patients with dark undereye circles or thinning areas on the scalp are excellent candidates for PRFM treatments. Patients looking for a longer-lasting treatment option than platelet-enriched plasma are ideal candidates.
Additionally, PRFM injections are a good choice for anyone considering this natural facial filler instead of a synthetic option.
At The Dermatology Institute of Boston, our providers utilize the Selphyl® PRFM System to create our PRFM. PRFM is a stable matrix composed of platelets, fibrin, circulating stem cells, cytokines, and leucocytes. The fibrin matrix helps maximize the number of platelets and growth factors compared to PRP.
When injected into the treatment area, the platelet-rich fibrin matrix triggers a regenerative response in the skin, increasing the rate of soft-tissue healing. Its growth factors enhance collagen production, rejuvenate the texture of the skin, and nourish the hair follicles to encourage regrowth.
Selphyller Gel™ PRFM filler is a completely natural soft-tissue dermal filler that our dermatologists can create using PRFM. This process involves application of heat, transforming the PRFM into a gel product.
This platelet-rich plasma gel filler can be injected anywhere on the face, providing instant increased volume and gradually revitalizing the skin. Selphyller Gel™ PRFM filler can address depressions in areas like the cheeks, temples, jawline, and undereyes. Unlike synthetic dermal filler products, it is 100% autologous, greatly reducing the chance of reactions.

The price of platelet-rich fibrin matrix treatment is determined based on several factors. These can include the number of areas being treated, your cosmetic goals, whether you’re receiving Selphyller Gel™ PRFM filler treatments, and whether you’re pairing PRFM with other cosmetic treatments.
During your PRFM consultation, one of our expert dermatologists will tell you more about the details of the treatment process. They will go over preparation, the steps of treatment, aftercare, and your potential results. Questions are highly encouraged at any time.
Your dermatologist will ask you about your medical history to ensure that the likelihood of complications is very low. This will include questions about allergies, current medications, pre-existing conditions, and recent treatments. Your dermatologist will also perform a facial examination to determine your skin quality and suitability for the platelet-rich fibrin matrix treatment.
At the start of the platelet-rich fibrin matrix treatment process, numbing medication is administered. A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient and placed into vials. These vials are then placed into a centrifuge, where they are spun for six to eight minutes, separating out the components of the blood.
A calcium chloride solution is added to the plasma, triggering the creation of the fibrin matrix. The plasma is then centrifuged at a faster speed for around 10 minutes, adding stability to the matrix.
Next, the PRFM is loaded into a syringe or a blunt-tipped cannula. Finally, it is carefully and precisely injected into the treatment areas.
Patients will need to return for additional PRFM treatment sessions; the number of sessions required will depend on the specifics of their aesthetic goals.
A PRFM session offers a faster healing time than many other facial-revitalization options. You’ll be able to get back to your regular schedule almost immediately afterwards.
You’ll likely experience mild swelling, bruising, soreness, redness, or itching in the treated areas. These reduce naturally over the course of the coming days. Discomfort is rare.
To address after-effects like these, apply ice as directed for 20 to 30 minutes after the treatment, and keep your head elevated. You may also take an OTC pain-control medication like acetaminophen as directed. Avoid NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for around two weeks.
Avoid taking a shower for at least six hours, do not apply pressure to the treated regions for eight hours minimum, and avoid applying makeup or skincare products. Stay away from sun exposure and physically taxing activities like heavy exercise for a minimum of three days.
