May – Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with 1 in 5 Americans developing it in their lifetime. Fortunately, early detection and prevention save lives.
Know the 3 most common skin cancers:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
- Most common
- Often appears as a pearly bump or pink patch
- Rarely spreads internally but can cause local damage
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
- Often appears as a rough, scaly patch or sore
- Can spread internally if untreated
Melanoma
- Most deadly but highly treatable when caught early
Look for the ABCDEs of Melanoma:
- Asymmetry
- Border irregularity
- Color variation
- Diameter >6mm
- Evolving shape/size/color
Sun Safety Tips:
- Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily (yes, even on cloudy days!)
- Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating
- Seek shade between 10 AM and 4 PM
- Rock a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses
- Avoid tanning beds!
Get Checked:
- Perform monthly self-skin checks
- See a dermatologist annually for a professional exam
- If you notice any new or changing moles, don’t wait—get it checked
