PRFM stands for platelet-rich fibrin matrix, an advanced form of platelet therapy designed to naturally restore and rejuvenate the skin and hair. You may have heard of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and PRFM takes it a step further! PRFM uses your own blood and platelets to concentrate growth factors that can stimulate collagen production and induce hair growth.

How It Works:

  • A small amount of your blood is drawn in our office (similar to a routine lab test).
  • Your blood sample is spun in a centrifuge to collect your platelets.
  • Unlike traditional PRP, a special SelphylÒ calcium stabilizer is then added to the platelets to create a fibrin matrix, which will allow for sustained release of the growth factors.
  • The PRFM can be injected into the scalp to promote hair growth, or it can be injected into areas of the face to improve wrinkles and aid in collagen production.

How Do PRP and PRFM Compare?

How Are PRP and PRFM Different?

PRFM allows for continued, sustained release of platelet derived growth factors over the period of days, rather than hours, compared to traditional PRP. This is possible using the patented SelphylÒ technology in the processing of the blood. Given the sustained release of the platelets with PRFM, it is possible that this may lead to more hair growth and more collagen production than what PRP can provide.

Additionally, for those looking for a natural filler in the face, PRFM can be heated prior to injection in order to solidify the platelets creating a SelphyllerÒ Gel that is a natural filler made of the patient’s own platelets. This is a great option for patients wanting to do filler but who may be hesitant of using a synthetic filler such as RestylaneÒ or JuvedermÒ.

How Are PRP and PRFM Similar?

From a patient’s standpoint, the procedures feels and seems identical. The blood is drawn in the same way in both procedures. The injections feel the same in both procedures. The only difference in the procedures is how the blood sample is processed by your physician’s office.

Are There Additional Risks With PRFM compared to PRP?

The only difference is that the treated area may feel tender for longer after the procedure with PRFM. For example, after scalp PRP for hair growth, the scalp may feel tender for about 1 – 2 hours. After scalp PRFM for hair growth, the scalp may feel tender for about 24 hours. Taking acetaminophen (TylenolÒ) helps to relieve the discomfort.

What Is The Price Difference Between PRP and PRFM?

Due to the special processing needs of PRFM utilizing the SelphylÒ technology, PRFM is priced slightly higher than PRP. During your consultation, ask your physician how much PRFM would cost in your situation as prices vary depending on the area of the scalp or face treated. If you previously had PRP at our office and are looking to switch to PRFM, please call and indicate this and we would be happy to give you a price over the phone.
